The Tradition of Birthday Cakes
Birthday cakes are a beloved tradition in many cultures to celebrate someone’s special day. But where did the custom originate? Records show some form of sweet breads and cakes being associated with birthdays as far back as ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. However, the modern birthday cake as we know it today has its earliest roots in 18th century Germany.
In the 1700s German bakers began the tradition of placing candles on birthday cakes - one for each year being celebrated. The candles were meant to symbolize “light” and were placed on the cake to represent the “light of life.” German children also commonly celebrated their birthdays with cake topped by glowing candles.
The birthday cake tradition spread across Europe in the 1800s and to America along with German immigrants. These cakes were often single layer cakes, sometimes flavored with chocolate or fruits. The earliest versions were not as ornate as modern cakes, decorated mostly with some nuts or dried fruits.
As baking techniques advanced in the late 1800s into the early 1900s, birthday cakes became more extravagant. Bakers started stacking two layers, filling them with frostings like buttercream, and coating the outside in frosting too. The expansion of the sugar trade and developments like food coloring allowed bakers to experiment with more decorative icings and designs on birthday treats.
The growth of consumerism and mass production in the early 20th century contributed to the popularization of birthday cakes across all classes of society in America. Local bakeries could provide everyone with an affordable birthday treat. Adding birthday candles became commonplace no matter what design the cake had.
Now birthday cakes come in endless shapes, sizes and flavors - though the tradition of topping them with glowing candles lives on. Whether it’s a decadent chocolate cake, a whimsical ice cream cake or a classic yellow cake with chocolate frosting - lighting the candles and singing “happy birthday” keeps that wish-making magic started by 18th century German bakers alive today!
